On Vicious Dogs, and Pit Bulls

South Milwaukee no longer bans pit bulls. Instead, we are treating all dogs equally under our tough, but fair, vicious dog ordinance.

The City Council voted to remove the pit bull ban, in place since the 1990s, last week. I support the change, and the rationale for making the decision.

There are a number of reasons why this is a good decision.

First, our Health Department doesn’t have the resources — specifically, people and time — to properly enforce the current ban. And even if they did, there is no definitive, scientific way to even tell a dog is a pit bull.

So how can we enforce this fairly?

Studies have also shown no single dog breed bites more than another. And the costs of breed bans for agencies like the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission — where 45% of the dogs they bring in each year are either pit bull or pit mixes, something I saw first-hand on a tour of the county taxpayer-funded facility last year — are real. Because of this, the Humane Society shows South Milwaukee is not alone in moving away from these breed-specific bans, and some states have even moved to prevent communities from enacting such bans.

Still, I would not support removing South Milwaukee’s ban, but for this: Our vicious dog ordinance has and continues to put strong regulations on the owners of vicious dogs, of all breeds, and delivers real punishments on those dogs and their owners. We will continue to diligently enforce it.

A vicious dog is a vicious dog. The revised ordinance keeps our community safe, and doesn’t discriminate.

Check out the ordinance here. Search “vicious dog.”

Independence Day 2017 in South Milwaukee, in Pictures

What a day!

We have done a lot to enhance our July 4th festivities in recent years — all without a single additional taxpayer dollar. That is due to our sponsors.

Thanks for stepping up! I’m looking at you, presenting sponsor Max A. Sass and Sons Funeral Homes, as well as TASC Services, South Milwaukee Ace, Nicholson Realty, Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Mara’s Sewing House, Sprecher Brewery, Beer Capitol Distributing, South Milwaukee Recreation Department and Milwaukee County Parks. And thanks to MJ Media for all the design and printing.

With their support, we were able to recognize the kids for their work on their bikes and costumes, offer games and bouncy houses, serve 1,100 hot dogs (up from 900 last year) and 1,000 cups of ice cream, deliver terrific live music throughout the day and finish with a fireworks show featuring the best finale I’ve seen at a parks event.

It was maybe the biggest crowd I’ve seen at our July 4th festivities since I’ve lived here, and I’m already can’t wait for 2018. Happy Fourth!

It’s Now Illegal to Park in Front of Mailboxes … and It’s About Time

The South Milwaukee City Council passed an ordinance outlawing parking in front of mailboxes in June, and clarified the ordinance around street parking of trailers, boats and related vehicles.

Check out the updated mailbox and trailer parking ordinances on our new, searchable municipal ordinance database tool. Enter “mailbox” in the search box.

And please obey the law!

Grant Park Beach Closed

19060171_1914460272170307_4992523429659486385_n

This is disappointing news, but the right call based on predictive modeling that is used. Safety first.

Samples have been gathered for testing, with results expected back on Friday. Check this page and the South Milwaukee Health Department Facebook page for updates.

I’m told the beach is cleaner overall than it has been for years, and was recently removed from an impaired waters list. These closures are rare. So let’s hope this is short lived.

South Shore Beach is also closed. Check out more coverage from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Fox 6. And here is more on a “nowcast prediction.”

One more note: Ferch’s Beachside Grille is very open. Please make it a point to stop down and support this local business especially now that the beach is closed for a time.

How about a burger, custard, beer and live music on Friday night?

A Word on Fireworks, and July 4th

JulyCity2017

A reminder from the South Milwaukee Police Department …

The City of South Milwaukee Police Department will have extra officers in Grant Park during the July 4th celebration. The officers will adopt a zero tolerance policy for persons discharging any type or size firework while in the park. There will be no warnings. If you discharge fireworks in the park, you will be cited, and the fireworks will be confiscated. The fine/forfeiture for fireworks violation in the park is $313.00.

The purpose of the enforcement is not to write more tickets, but to discourage the hazardous situations that are created when untrained citizens bring fireworks that launch flaming and exploding projectiles into the park. These fireworks are then ignited and launched from sections of lawn packed with citizens almost shoulder to shoulder. The persons lighting the fireworks have no idea where they will fly or when they will explode. The sizes of the fireworks coming into the park are getting bigger and more dangerous every year. In recent years blankets of uninvolved persons have been burned by flaming debris and a rocket landed and exploded in an unoccupied baby stroller. There are almost no fireworks that are lawful to discharge in a county park or anywhere else in the City of South Milwaukee. The South Milwaukee Police Department encourages citizens to come to the park, enjoy the fireworks display provided by the City, and use their own fireworks at another time, when it is safe and lawful to do so. The Department would also like to encourage people to drink responsibly, and not to drink and drive.

South Milwaukee’s Top Gardens, in Pictures

Another Garden Tour is in the books, and the Mayor’s Choice winners are …

  • Grand Prize: The Webbs, 1013 Elm Avenue
  • Honorable Mention: the Chodkowskis, 1402 Marion Avenue; the Zinkiewiczes, 1515 16th Avenue; and the Maloneys, 1710 Cherry Street.

Well done, all! It was my toughest choice yet. All participants were deserving of recognition. South Milwaukee is getting more beautiful by the day, and these homeowners — all of them on the tour, really — are leading the way.

And thanks to the South Milwaukee Historical Society and Garden Club for putting on such a terrific event. It gets bigger and better every year, and that’s a credit to the dozens of volunteers who make it happen.
