text1459_14

We’re big users of the South Milwaukee Recreation Department and other programming through the school district.

Basketball, football, South Milwaukee Youth Theater, the fitness center — that’s just a few of the offerings we’ve taken advantage of over the years, and continue to.

In other words, we watch closely for the arrival of the Rec Department’s seasonal guides. And the latest just came in the mail.

Check out the online version of the summer rec guide here … and join us in signing up for one of these great activities.

The South Milwaukee Police Department has issued the following press release about a shooting incident that allegedly occurred overnight …

South Milwaukee Election Results: Cruz, Sanders, Bradley, Abele, Sartori, School Board Incumbents Win

noexpect-vote1

The results are in, and the winner was democracy.

Turnout for Tuesday’s election was terrific, as more than 63 percent of registered voters cast ballots in South Milwaukee.

Here are local results for top races

  • In the Republican presidential primary, Sen. Ted Cruz tallied 2,093 votes (55 percent) to Donald Trump’s 1,163 (30.5 percent). John Kasich had 441 votes (11.6 percent).
  • In the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders won with 1,901 votes (52 percent) to 1,712 for Hillary Clinton (46.8 percent).
  • For Wisconsin Supreme Court, Rebecca Bradley beat JoAnne Kloppenburg — 3,701 votes (49.4 percent) to 3,194 (42.7 percent).
  • For Milwaukee County executive, Chris Abele (4,091 votes; 54.6 percent) beat Sen. Chris Larson (2,834 votes; 37.9 percent) locally.
  • David Sartori defeated Tony Bloom in the race to replace Pat Jursik, who is retiring from her District 8 seat on the Milwaukee County Board. Sartori tallied 2,665 votes (35.6 percent) to Bloom’s 2,584 (34.5 percent) in South Milwaukee.
  • For South Milwaukee School Board, incumbents Terri Travia and Doug Perry defeated challenger Frank “Disco” Gratke.

I want to thank all of our election workers and the clerk’s staff for their efforts today — and thank all of the voters for stepping up.

It’s exciting to see turnout like this. It’s democracy in action.

It’s Election Day … Vote!

As if you needed a reminder …

Tuesday is election day, and I ask everyone to get to the polls, do their duty as citizens and vote.

It’s a full ballot, from the presidential primary, to State Supreme Court to Milwaukee County executive and supervisor to South Milwaukee School Board.

Here are additional voting details …

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • First District voters vote at Divine Mercy School, 695 College Ave.
  • Second District voters vote at Lakeview School, 711 Marion Ave.
  • Third District voters vote at City Hall, 2424 15th Ave.
  • Fourth District voters vote at Rawson Elementary, 1410 Rawson Ave.
  • Not sure what district you live in? Here is a map.
  • Don’t forget: Voter ID is now in effect.

Check out more details on the city’s elections web page … and look for more information on local results from South Milwaukee Blog later tonight or Wednesday morning.

You will note: I have joined with a number of other suburban mayors to endorse Chris Abele for Milwaukee County executive. I like Sen. Larson and would gladly endorse him in another run for Senate. But I proudly stand behind Chris Abele in this race.

Why do I want four more years?

Chris has been good for the South Shore and South Milwaukee, and I’m proud to support him for a second term. He has restored fiscal discipline and accountability to county government, while also driving increased efficiency in how the county delivers its services. Chris is unafraid to drive big ideas to solve big problems. From working to end chronic homelessness to stepping up to invest in cleaner watersheds and our parks, he is committed to making Milwaukee County a better place. And he doesn’t do it alone. Chris values partnerships, and he has led the way in driving cooperation among communities. Chris believes we’re all in this together. So do I.

Learn More: Our Plan for a Promising Future

HandoutBlog

2035 starts now.

For almost a year now, we’ve partnered with you and Graef Consulting in building our 2035 comprehensive and downtown plan update — the vital roadmap that will guide our economic development and redevelopment work for years to come.

I can’t wait to get started. But first things first: We want to know what you think.

From the feedback sessions at the farmers’ market and downtown trick-or-treating to the robust discussions by our city committees to your input at open meetings, residents’ voices have been an important part of this work since the beginning.

And you will have several opportunities to weigh in on the draft plan in coming weeks.

  • First, you will see informational boards and other details at each of the polling places tomorrow.
  • You can also review the plan online here, or in person at City Hall. Here is a link to the city’s Comprehensive Plan web page.
  • Then, on April 21, we are holding an open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and a formal public hearing at 7 at City Hall. The South Milwaukee Common Council is expected to vote on the plan at its May 3 meeting.

Meanwhile, we will continue efforts to begin implementation immediately. We’ve been working on that for months, and we’ll share some exciting news soon.

A plan is only as good as the will to work it, and we will work this plan. Bring it on!

OK … so I lied about taking a few days off from blogging 🙂 See you Saturday!

Just a quick reminder that I’m hosting my next Meet the Mayor session this Saturday, March 26, at South Milwaukee’s newest tavern – The Tap Room.

Join me from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1301 Milwaukee Ave. and see what Ryan and his team have done with the place. It’s impressive.

Bring your questions, comments or concerns, check out some March Madness, and grab a beer and lunch while you’re there.

Thanks to the folks at The Tap Room for hosting!

And mark your calendars for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, when Revolution Hair Studio, 1017 Milwaukee Ave., is hosting my next Meet the Mayor session.

Taking a Few Days Off from Blogging

Barring significant breaking news, I’ll be taking a few days off from the blog.

Thank you so much to all of my readers. I take open and honest communication seriously, and I am glad to offer this service.

The blog will return soon.

In the meantime, please like my mayoral Facebook page, where I more regularly post news updates and photos — often in real time, faster than I can write a blog post.

Talk to you soon!

Good Luck, Rocket Robotics!

IMG_3942

I had a chance to meet Rocket Robotics, FIRST Team 3596, last week, and I left feeling so impressed with our next generation of engineers and the work they’re doing — as well as with the community and business partnership it takes to make their work possible.

The robotics team, in its sixth year at South Milwaukee High School, is 15-20 students strong and is led by Brian Niggemann, a Caterpillar engineer who volunteers countless hours of his time to mentor the team and prepare them for their annual competition. He is joined by three other Caterpillar employee volunteers who bring their engineering expertise and guidance to the kids you see pictured above.

Caterpillar is also a significant funder of the program, paying the team’s entry fee and also donating funds and equipment used in building the robots. In addition to Caterpillar, The Rotary Club of Mitchell Field stepped up with significant funding this year, as well as smaller contributions from Vito Clean, Alliance Manufacturing Group, and Styled Aesthetic.

But it really comes down to the kids and the passion they bring to this, which was clearly evident when I visited with them.

I wish them good luck at the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, at the Milwaukee Panther Arena downtown. Learn more about the competition here. It’s open to the public and free. Stop by and see these students in action, and I’m certain you’ll come away as impressed as I was.

Their robot is wrapped in plastic below. They didn’t want to risk me breaking it 🙂

Welcome Home, Jackie Kashian

nightofcomedyRGB150-12

All joking aside, we have another native daughter to celebrate.

Jackie Kashian returns to South Milwaukee, her hometown, for “An Evening of Comedy” on Saturday at the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are still available. From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story on her show …

Kashian will return to her hometown, which she called “adorable” and “sweetly funny,” to headline an evening of comedy Saturday at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. That center is part of South Milwaukee High School; she lived near it growing up and graduated from there in 1983.

If comedians were assigned roles like saints, Kashian would be patron of the dorks, the nerds, the gamers and the pop-culture enthusiasts, thanks in large part to her long-running podcast, The Dork Forest, in which she interviews comedians and other folks about their obsessions. For newbies and proto-dorks, she recommended checking out an episode with Tacoma comic Jim Stewart Allen, who gave her a passionate hour of conversation about the real history involved in the game “The Oregon Trail.”

Kashian said she embraced her inner dork at age 8, when a brother gave her the book “Harriet the Spy.” Like Harriet, she began her own journal. “I would journal about every weird, obsessive thought I had,” she said.

Lest you think that’s too age-appropriate normal to count as dorky, Kashian notes she was further inspired by an episode of “M*A*S*H” that featured psychiatrist Sidney Freedman writing to Sigmund Freud. “I started writing to Sigmund Freud when I was 10 or 11,” she said. “I was going through puberty and I thought I was crazy.”

Welcome home!
