Taking A Cardboard Boat Ride … Across The Middle School Pool

A cool event (and program) from the school district … this sounds like fun.

Students from South Milwaukee High School’s new Technology & Engineering Academy will be conducting their first annual cardboard boat regatta on Monday, October 13.

While learning about engineering concepts, teams of three students are designing full-sized boats for two of them to actually row across the middle school pool and back.  The boats are built out of only cardboard, clear packing tape, and a little hot glue.  Their engineering success or failure will be evident when they enter the water for the first time.

Come cheer the students on beginning at 4:00 (doors open at 3:30).  We hope to see you there, and please bring family and friends!

Well-Deserved Recognition For Our Police Department

SMPD accreditationThe South Milwaukee Police Department continues to deliver. But don’t take my word for it.

Consider that of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group, which has once again accredited our department following a rigorous review of the SMPD earlier this year. It is the fifth time the department has been accredited, the most in the state, and the department is one of less than 50 in the state to be going through the accreditation process.

The department was recognized at our City Council meeting Tuesday night.

WILEAG exists to “promote excellence and professionalism in policing” and includes 237 standards it promotes with local police departments. From the accreditation report:

The assessors were in agreement that the South Milwaukee Police Department is an excellent example of a WILEAG approved law enforcement agency; and is why they are sought out by law enforcement agencies for guidance when looking to become WILEAG accredited.

SMPD follows their Mission Statement: “We, the members of the South Milwaukee Police Department, are dedicated to providing a proactive, full service department that enhances the quality of life in our community by reducing crime through the protection of life and property”.

Central to their mission is a set of values that guide their work and decisions which allow them to make significant contributions to improving the quality of life in South Milwaukee; those values are: Human Life, Integrity, themselves, Excellence, Cooperation, Accountability, Laws and the Constitution. …

Reflecting on their proofs of compliance, feedback from the community and professional associates, and our observations of the agency, the team concluded unanimously that the department had achieved compliance with the applicable standards established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group.

Congratulations to the SMPD!

Going Pink For A Cure: Recognizing Cancer Survivors, T-Shirt Orders Due

A note from Andrea Kaplan, South Milwaukee High School associate principal … she can be reached at akaplan@sdsm.k12.wi.us.

On October 21st the School District of South Milwaukee will Go Pink to support Justice for a Cure.  In celebration of this great cause the Middle School will raise funds and host the Pink Day Assembly.  I am excited to have this opportunity at the middle school and look forward to working with many groups throughout the district to make this event memorable.

This year there will be a portion of the assembly dedicated to celebrating breast cancer survivors within our community or who have a tie to our community.  It is important to show our students the reality and impact that breast cancer has on not only ourselves but on our community.

If you are a survivor or you know a survivor who lives or has ties to the South Milwaukee community I would like to personally invite you or them to be a guest at our assembly.  Our special guests will not have a speaking part but will have a spotlight moment.

Please feel free to forward this information to parents, family members, friends or anyone you know that would be willing to be a guest for this amazing celebration.

RSVP to Ms. Kaplan for more information.

And don’t forget that t-shirt orders are due today. More here …

Also, a reminder to order your Breast Cancer Justice for a Cure T-shirt today (deadline Monday, October 6). Shirts specifically made for the day are available for purchase online. There are pictures of the designed shirt below along with a link to the website where you may choose to make a purchase. The prices of the shirts are set at $12.00 for youth sizes, $12.00 for adult sizes, and $14.50 for sizes XXL and up. We ask the entire community to come together and wear pink on October 21. Each contribution made by a member of South Milwaukee is very much appreciated. Orders are due by October 6th. Click on the following link to order your shirt: http://smgoespink.storenvy.com/

Downtown Momentum

I am excited about downtown South Milwaukee, and where it’s headed.

Here are a few reasons why.

For starters, I am proud to announce that three new destination retail businesses are planning to open downtown in coming weeks – exactly the kind of businesses we need more of in our city center.

  • One, MKE City Sippers, is a new upscale coffee shop opening at 911 Milwaukee Ave., between I Can’t Resist Kids Resale and Dowling Community Acupuncture. Owned by Nicole Maxey, a young professional excited about the prospects of our city center, it will serve Anodyne Coffee (terrific, if you haven’t been to their stores in Bay View and Walker’s Point), gourmet lattes, fair trade loose leaf Rishi tea, Dang! Butterscotch Root Beer, cupcakes and other locally baked goods. MKE City Sippers — pictured below — will also be offering free wifi, books to read, fun coffee mugs and tea infusers, unique gift items and more. They are hoping to open the week of October 27. Check out their Facebook page in the meantime.
  • The former Voice Journal/Graphic/Kelly Driving School building is also getting new life as a retail storefront for Troy Kinunen. Troy is the owner of Mears Online Auctions, located in the beautifully redone St. Mary’s Hall in town. His storefront at 723 Milwaukee will feature a unique mix of old-fashioned candy, novelties and collectibles. Troy just received approval from the Plan Commission to move ahead with a complete overhaul of the building, including construction of a second-floor condo and storage space to go along with the retail storefront. He expects to open Dec. 1.
  • And, finally, the former South Milwaukee Carpet/Garden Theater won’t stay closed for long. While the carpet store at 1007 Milwaukee closed this summer with the retirement of the Lugauers, their son, Gordon, who grew up above the carpet shop, has purchased the building. His plans? To open a third location for his Board Game Barrister business, joining existing locations at the Greenfield Towne Center and Bayshore Town Center. Tentative opening date is Oct. 27.

Please join me in welcoming all three of these businesses to town — and join me in patronizing them. I’ll keep you posted as their grand openings draw near … and pledge to keep working my hardest to attract just these types of businesses to our fair city.

That’s just the start when it comes to downtown. Hopefully you’ve already seen some of the other efforts underway to improve our city center. For example, hundreds, if not thousands, of people are rediscovering downtown South Milwaukee through special events.

  • The South Milwaukee Downtown Market continues to rock and roll, and this summer its 11th Avenue location got a new look with a new road and streetscaping project. (The plantings just went in last week.)
  • The first two Guardian Credit Union Movies in the Market have also been a hit, both drawing hundreds of attendees following the farmers’ markets. The third outdoor movie, “Hocus Pocus,” is showing following the market’s season-ending Fall Family Festival this Thursday, Oct. 9. And Guardian — a proud downtown business of its own — has already committed to doing three more downtown movies in 2015!
  • We’re also bringing Rocketober to downtown South Milwaukee on Saturday, Oct. 25, with a special trick-or-treating scavenger hunt just for merchants in our city center. More details to come.
  • Christmas will also be special downtown, with events like the tree lighting and parade and a new “shop local” event being planned by the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. (Stay tuned for details on this one.) The South Milwaukee Community and Business Association has also led the charge in replacing more than 60 street decorations, purchasing new LED light fixtures, among other changes.

We’ve also made progress in more proactively enforcing our building codes. Hopefully you’re seeing a difference, one building at a time. A new window her, a paint job there, or maybe removal of an ugly awning. We have lots more work to do in this area, and we’re doing it, putting a laser focus on making sure our downtown building owners live up to the baseline of our city ordinances. Too many of them haven’t been.

And as we do this – all of this – we’re making strong progress toward the long-term work we need to do downtown as well. That starts with our long-overdue downtown plan.

There are lots of moving parts here, including the potential hiring of a citywide economic development director, formation of a downtown South Milwaukee advisory committee, and selection of a third-party consultant to aid us in the planning process. The economic development director position and planning consultant are both funded in the first executive budget I’ve been a part of as mayor, finalized late last week.

So, lots going on. Excited? I am. Much more to come!

Big Homecoming Win — And Another Conference Title — For South Milwaukee

Lucky 7-0 … and a third straight Woodland East Conference championship.

Not a bad Homecoming for the South Milwaukee football team, which rolled to a 42-0 victory over Cudahy on Friday at Spaltholz Field.

The offense continued to dominate, racking up 273 yards on the ground. Ian Pribyl ran 16 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Justin Oliden had 11 carries for 124 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard second-quarter TD run. The Rocket defense held the Packers to 188 yards of total offense.

Now come two huge challenges for the Rockets — two Woodland West “crossover” games against powers Pewaukee and Greendale. First, it’s at Pewaukee this Friday at 7 p.m., and then South Milwaukee hosts Greendale on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.

Then it’s WIAA playoff time. Bring it on!

Let’s keep the perfect season going.

An Open Letter On Leaves

Dear Neighbors,

Autumn is here, and I have a humble request: Put the rakes away, and mow.

In other words, please consider not having the city pick up and dispose of your leaves this fall, be it through our street collection program or at our self-deposit station.

I ask this because starting this fall we are no longer able to dispose of the leaves we collect at the two nearby locations we had been using. Instead, we are now faced with having to truck most, if not all, the leaves we collect to a landfill in Muskego, almost an hour away.

This is a problem for a number of reasons.

  • First, it is extremely costly for taxpayers. From the labor costs of picking up the leaves and trucking them to the landfill to what the landfill bills us for accepting the leaves to the fuel costs associated with that work, we expect to spend more than $20,000 on leaf collection and disposal this fall, if nothing changes.
  • Second, it makes the whole process much more inefficient. Taking an entire leaf crew off the street for several hours to travel to and from the landfill is an inefficient use of labor and equipment when our crews could be back on the street collecting more leaves.
  • Third, it is bad for the environment. While the landfill does compost the leaves we give them, the extra fuel it takes to make the trip alone makes this bad for our planet. Plus, leaves being left in the street can be washed into area waterways, causing water quality issues. And piles of leaves can, and do, clog sewer drains during rainstorms.

My hope: We can reduce the amount of leaves we pick up this fall and every fall going forward. Even a 10% reduction would make a difference.

So, what I am asking taxpayers? Instead of raking your leaves into the street, please consider mulching them with your lawnmower, like I do. Or composting them. Or saving a few bags of leaves in your garage to use for mulch next spring. Anything that keeps us from taking your leaves on an hour-long truck ride. That’s not good for anyone.

As we do this, I also pledge the city will take a hard look at longer term solutions here – ways we can better offer this service in the years ahead. I expect we will continue to pick up and dispose of homeowners’ leaves. But something has to change.

Thank you for working with us on this issue.

Sincerely,

Erik Brooks

Mayor, City of South Milwaukee

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has some good tips for homeowners in dealing with fall yard waste. Check it out here, and click on the “Fall Yard Care” tab. And please note that there are certain requirements around composting in the City of South Milwaukee. You can learn more in Section 8.09(9)(d)a of the Municipal Code online at our city website.

Information Meeting Set For Proposed St. Adalbert’s Development

A public information meeting has been scheduled around the 37-unit affordable apartment complex proposed for the former St. Adalbert’s school, gymnasium and rectory.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at City Hall.

It will include a presentation from Gorman & Co., which is asking the city to rezone more than two acres of land near 16th and Manitoba for the project. Representatives from the company will also take questions.

You can see the letter we’re sending to residents in the neighborhood near St. Adalbert’s here. Here is Milwaukee Journal Sentinel coverage of the proposal. And here is Gorman’s website, with information on the other workforce housing developments they’ve done across the country, including several in the Milwaukee area.

My ask: Please become familiar with the details of the proposed development and developer before making up minds. Get the facts, and questions answered, at the Oct. 13 meeting. Then let’s have an open debate.

I look forward to it.

My promise: No matter your position on this issue, you will have a chance to be heard, be it through this public information meeting, a potential formal public hearing and at future meetings of the Plan Commission and City Council. I’ll keep you posted on all of these opportunities.
