We can all stand to get fitter and lose a few pounds. Especially me.
That’s why I’m proud to join with the mayors of Oak Creek, Cudahy, St. Francis, Franklin, and Greenfield to present the South Suburban Mayors’ Fitness Challenge.
The goal: Improve the health of our local communities by partnering with wellness-focused businesses and organizations to put on a series of free fitness, educational and social events.
Stay tuned for a list of participating businesses and organizations, but it promises to be a good group — and a great community-building event.
Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi developed the concept for the Challenge in 2012 to not only get area residents on the path to wellness, but also to promote area businesses that were already committed to that mission.
The inaugural Oak Creek Challenge, which focused on weight loss, took place between November 2012 and February 2013. More than 450 residents signed up to participate, and 15 events — including workouts, nutrition workshops, and cooking demonstrations — were hosted. As a community, Oak Creek cumulatively lost nearly 1,000 pounds. The second Challenge, which focused on overall fitness, began in September 2013 and finished in January 2014. More than 700 people registered, and 34 different events were held, building on the successes of the first year.
I am proud South Milwaukee is part of the third Challenge.

In case you’ve missed it, there are some big changes happening at the Mill Pond Warming House.

The Warming House is getting a much needed makeover.
The Friends of the Mill Pond have replaced the old doors with steel ones, the ceiling has been sanitized and freshly painted, ceiling fans installed, electrical upgrades done and now the outside is getting a new face. Windows are being worked on and then the entire building will be freshly painted.
The Friends of the Mill Pond will be hosting an “Open House” on September 27th from 1-4 p.m.

From the South Milwaukee Police Department press release …
On the afternoon of August 11, 2014 the City of South Milwaukee Police Department took a report from a 15 year old male who reported being robbed at gunpoint on the street near 13th Avenue at Menomonee Avenue in South Milwaukee minutes earlier.
On August 12, 2014, while in the area of Rawson Avenue at 14th Avenue, the officers who took the robbery report saw what they believed to be the suspect vehicle, a green truck without registration plates. The officers followed the vehicle intending to stop it. The vehicle sped away while officers followed with their emergency lights and siren activated. The vehicle wove its way through residential streets until the initial officers lost sight of it in the area of Hickory at Nicholson and terminated their pursuit.
Moments later the suspect vehicle was spotted by another South Milwaukee officer, in a marked police vehicle, as the suspect vehicle went North on Nicholson Avenue at College Avenue. This officer followed with lights and siren activated still attempting to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued through parts of the City of Cudahy, the City of St. Francis, and the City of Milwaukee. The fleeing driver eventually pulled over and stopped on Holt Avenue at Burrell. No one was injured and no property was damaged due to this incident. Officers from Cudahy, St. Francis and the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department assisted the South Milwaukee officers.
The driver, a 20 year old Milwaukee man, was arrested for Eluding Police. He will be questioned about the earlier incident, and will be transported to the Milwaukee County Jail to await a charging conference on August 14, 2014. The sole passenger, a 19 year old South Milwaukee man, was taken into custody, questioned and will not be charged in reference to this incident.

Results are in from Tuesday’s primary election, and one of the big headlines locally was turnout.
More than 28% of registered voters voted, ahead of expectations.
Among the local results in contested races:
The number of “undervotes” — blank ballots for certain races — was also telling, albeit not necessarily surprising. Some of the races had hundreds of blank ballots reported. There were only a handful in the sheriff’s race, suggesting to me there were a number of Republican voters who “crossed over” to vote only in this race, as Democrats.

The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary season this year, and they want local residents to be part of the show.
The SMPAC’s “10th Anniversary Gala: An Extravaganza of Local Talent!” is set for May 1, 2015. Ten performers will be chosen for the show, with auditions to be on October 29.

Back to blogging … and back from Disney … and here is what was waiting in my email inbox.
First, the South Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a house fire Monday …
At approximately 5:38 this evening, SMFD responded to a 9-1-1 report of a basement fire at 1717 Edgewood Avenue. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was seen coming from the house and SMPD reported that two adult, male occupants had self-evacuated prior to their arrival. SMFD crews advanced hose lines into the basement and found significant heat and zero visibility conditions. The fire was located and quickly extinguished, but not before the basement suffered significant heat and smoke damage and the first floor suffered moderate smoke damage. Mutual aid departments were called to provide support at the scene and to handle any additional calls that may have come in. Preliminary investigation identified the area of origin, however, absent a thorough inspection of the electrical system, a definite cause could not be identified. The fire will remain under investigation until more information is learned. The occupants had an alternate place to stay, so the services of the Red Cross were not necessary. No injuries were reported.

And word that the South Milwaukee Police Department is taking part in the Dunkin’ Donuts Cop on Top program, where one of our officers will be sitting atop to the new South Milwaukee location from 6 to 11 a.m. on Friday, August 15, to raise money for Special Olympics Wisconsin. Here is a flyer.
