South Milwaukee City Council Roundup: Audit, New Bars, Lakefront Park, Dunkin’ Donuts & More

It was a full agenda at Tuesday’s South Milwaukee City Council meeting. Among the items …

  • Audit. The council heard from Baker Tilly Virchow Krause on their audit of our 2012 financials. It was pretty routine, with no significant issues reported, as they continued to endorse what we’re doing and how we’re doing it when it comes to being responsible stewards of taxpayer money. If you’d like a copy of the audit, stop by City Hall.
  • New Bars. The council also approved licenses for two new bars: Cafe Sport Apollonia at 1213 N. Chicago Ave. (near De Rango’s Pizzeria) and Milwaukee Lounge, 1009 Milwaukee Ave. (the former Liquid Hideout and Mitchell’s Field).
  • Lakefront Park. The council approved awarding a $59,000 professional services contract to AECOM Technical Services Inc. for development of a plan for reuse of the former Northwest Barrel site property along the lakefront. Learn more about the opportunity for this land in my previous post. I look forward to seeing what AECOM comes up with as options for this site, both for its potential public use and its role in stormwater management.
  • Menomonee Avenue Project. The council voted to deny planned unit development zoning necessary for construction of a proposed 16-unit apartment complex on city-owned land at 909 Menomonee Ave. I’ll keep you posted on future development proposals for the site.
  • Dunkin’ Donuts. The council approved the conditional use permit for construction of the Dunkin’ Donuts planned for 3103 S. Chicago Ave. (at the corner of Drexel and South Chicago, as an outlot of the existing Aldi-anchored strip mall). Construction is expected to begin soon, and the company hopes to have the building complete yet this year. Learn more in my previous post. Welcome to South Milwaukee!

All votes were unanimous.

Commuting Note: You Can Now Go 50 MPH (Legally) On Lake Parkway

For those who commute to points north and west from South Milwaukee, people like me, this is big news …

You can now travel 50 mph (legally) on the Lake Parkway.

I say “legally” because few actually followed the posted 40 mph speed limit (including me, I must admit).

New signs were posted Tuesday.

Return To The Playoffs? South Milwaukee Football Preview

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is out with its Woodland Conference football preview, and the newspaper has pegged South Milwaukee as slight favorites in the Woodland Conference East Division.

Here is the preview. And here is the outlook for the team …

The Rockets are slight favorites to win the division ahead of Whitnall. Defense will be the team’s strength with first-team all-division pick Honerlaw anchoring the line. Another positive is the return of Oliden, who passed for 991 yards and ran for 549 last season as a first-year starter. Top concerns? Developing the offensive line and receiving corps.

South Milwaukee (5-4 overall and 5-3 in the league last year) opens its season Friday at Shorewood/Messmer. The Rockets’ home opener is Friday, August 30, against Westosha Central. See the full schedule here.

Police Blotter: Burglary At South Milwaukee Little League Complex

NOW has published a new police blotter, and it includes this disturbing item …

A safe, several microphones and an extension cord were taken from inside of the South Milwaukee Little League office building, 701 Mackinac Ave., during the night of Aug. 8 or morning of Aug. 9. According to security footage, three men gained entry to the building with a key. The stolen items were collectively worth $615. An 18-year-old Cudahy man was arrested for the incident. During a search of that man’s house, police also found marijuana plants, and he was additionally arrested for manufacturing THC and bail jumping.

And this item …

The man was found on the same block with a folding knife and admitted being at the bar, but denied brandishing the knife. South Shore Crime Update

Update: The South Milwaukee man accused of making the threats in Cudahy is identified in this story.

Rounding up some crime items from around the South Shore …

First, this item from NOW about a South Milwaukee man allegedly threatening Sikh shooting-type violence to police officers.

And NOW has published a new police blotter, including this …

About $500 worth of ice cream was stolen from a delivery truck while it was parked in the 3400 block of South Chicago Avenue between Aug. 7 and 1 p.m. Aug 9.

And this …

A 36-year-old South Milwaukee man was arrested for resisting an officer, possession of a controlled substance and possession with the intent to deliver in the 1200 block of Milwaukee Avenue about 6 p.m. Aug. 9. The man threw away two bottles of prescription pain pills, tried to run multiple times while police were taking him into custody, and was shocked with a stun gun during one escape attempt. In addition, he was arrested on a Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department warrant.

And this …

A row of bushes caught fire in front of Rawson School, 1410 Rawson Ave., about 10 a.m. Aug. 5. The fire caused a lot of smoke but was out before the South Milwaukee Fire Department arrived. The school was not damaged.

Also, County Supervisor Pat Jursik sent this to her constituents on Thursday …

I have two alerts I want to make you aware of: first, St. Francis Police Chief Brian Kaebisch has asked citizens to be aware of car break-ins along Lake Drive. The Police Department asks when you park along Lake Drive in St. Francis not to have any items left in your car that are visible such as a purse, cell phone, laptop, etc. I think it is a good rule for any car parked in public areas.

In addition, there is an alert from the Milwaukee Police Department regarding Bay View. Several women have been assaulted over the last several months in Bay View. The most recent assault happened last week. The Milwaukee Police Department is working to apprehend anyone who is responsible for the assaults.

And, in Oak Creek, there was this scary road rage incident and a couple car thefts.
