Arrests After Reports Of Shots Fired, Standoff In Cudahy

South Milwaukee was reportedly among the departments who responded to the incident Saturday afternoon on Packard Avenue.

Check out stories in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and WTMJ radio. From WTMJ:

It began around 8:30 Saturday morning when witnesses reported shots exchanged between two men in the alley behind the apartments in the 62-hundred block of Packard.

One man was taken in for questioning right away, but a second ran into the apartments, and holed-up inside for four hours.

Prayers

Another mass shooting. Another senseless tragedy.

Please keep Friday’s victims and their friends and families in your thoughts and prayers. And hold your kids a bit closer tonight. I know I will … because I know that could have been my kindergartner or second-grader at the end of that gun.

Updated: Man Dies After Car Crashes Into South Milwaukee Home, Catches Fire

Update: Check out coverage from TMJ4, WISN and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

There was a scary — and tragic — incident early Thursday morning near 9th and Edgewood, as a car crashed into a house and caught fire, killing the driver and setting the home on fire.

Everyone in the house got out safely.

Check out an updated press release from the South Milwaukee Police Department, noting that police “were not actively pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash.” From it:

On Thursday 12/13/12 at about 0151hrs, an SMPD officer, while running stationary radar, observed a vehicle pass him at approximately 25mph over the posted speed limit. The vehicle failed to stop for both audible and visual signals and subsequently crashed.

The fleeing vehicle had accelerated to a point that the officer could no longer see the vehicle.  The officer was not actively pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash.  After traveling approximately 11 blocks, the officer discovered a vehicle which had crashed in the 700 block of Edgewood.  This vehicle is believed to have been the fleeing vehicle.

The vehicle was on fire and the fire spread to a nearby house.  The residents of the house were safely evacuated.  SMPD is still working to identify the driver, and lone occupant, who was deceased.   The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted in the accident investigation.  Investigation is ongoing.  No further information is available at this time.

Here is coverage, including video, from Fox 6.

I’ll keep you posted if I learn more.

Acting Fire Chief “Acting” No More

South Milwaukee has a new fire chief — one that’s technically been in the job for nearly a year.

The Police and Fire Commission appointed Joe Knitter the city’s new fire chief at its meeting on Tuesday. Knitter had been acting fire chief since February, as South Milwaukee looked to permanently replace retired Chief Jay Behling.

That replacement is Knitter, and it’s a great choice. I have been extremely impressed with Chief Knitter’s work in his “acting” role — and as a captain before that. He’s stepped up department communications, embraced technology and personally sought to better himself through education and training, keeping the department strong during a period of transition and difficult budgets.

I’m happy to see him rewarded for that.

Look Closely: South Milwaukee Is All Over The New Aaron Rodgers-Ford Commercials

This is really, really cool …

So, there are three new Aaron Rodgers-Ford television spots being released, and they have a distinctly local feel — as in, large parts of them were shot in South Milwaukee.

See the story and ads here.

And I’ll let Ante Udovicic, athletics and activities director for the South Milwaukee School District, take it from there …

“If you watch the commercial shown at the top and 2 others down below on the website page, you will see commercials featuring  Aaron Rodgers. What is most interesting about these commercials is the location for parts of this shoot that was shot on a Sunday in July. If you look closely, you will see the following areas from the South Milwaukee 6-12 campus:

COMMERCIAL #1

  • Rawson Woods – Opening scene shows Rodgers running through Rawson Woods…really, that’s Rawson Woods!
  • Middle School Weight Room – Rodgers is lifting weights & then using our boys track team’s heavy ropes
  • Practice Field east of Spaltholz Field – Rodgers is pulling a tire on our east practice field
  • Spaltholz Field – Rodgers is running tires on our football field (you can see the visiting team benches in the background and then you can catch a glimpse of the SM water tower too)

COMMERCIAL #2 (labeled http://www.cutters.com/q?id=3940)

  • Football/Wrestling Locker Room – As Rodgers puts his jersey on, you can catch a glimpse of the lockers and the small square tile floor in the locker room that our FB & Wrestling teams use in the middle school)
  • Hallway by Door #40 – Rodgers runs through the hallway nearest the middle school weight room leading to the area between the HS & MS that leads to the Door #34 entrance.

COMMERCIAL #3 (labeled http://www.cutters.com/q?id=3944)

  • You will see 3 passes thrown to actors. Those passes were not actually thrown by Rodgers, they were thrown by 2012 SM grad, former SM QB, and current football player at Concordia University, Pat Berg!

COMMERCIAL #4 (labeled http://www.cutters.com/q?id=3952)

  • This is more of a “making of” clip and not a commerciall actually. And it is true, it only took Rodgers 2 takes to make the throw. This was shot at a farm in Muskego and is a pretty cool clip to see.

While it is not immediately obvious that these scenes from the 3 Ford commercials were shot on the SM 6-12 campus, this explanation hopefully will help you notice it next time you see one of these commercials on TV.”

I told you this was cool 🙂 Ante, thanks for sharing.

Another Step Taken In Extending 794

The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission added the extension of the Lake Parkway to the Year 2035 Regional Transportation Plan, unanimously approving the six-mile project at its meeting Wednesday.

Check out the press release from Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik, a champion of this project, and coverage from Oak Creek Patch.

Jursik’s statement:

An extended Lake Parkway will provide the necessary transportation infrastructure to promote economic development in Milwaukee County’s South Shore and around the Port of Milwaukee and General Mitchell International Airport.  We are part of the increasingly powerful lake corridor mega-region that stretches from Gary, Indiana through Chicago, Illinois to Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  I call upon State elected officials to fund this important corridor project.

Indeed, that is the hardest part about this important initiative. I’ll keep you posted.
