It’s Election Day … Vote!

As if you needed a reminder …

Tuesday is election day, and I ask everyone to get to the polls, do their duty as citizens and vote.

It’s a full ballot, from the presidential primary, to State Supreme Court to Milwaukee County executive and supervisor to South Milwaukee School Board.

Here are additional voting details …

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • First District voters vote at Divine Mercy School, 695 College Ave.
  • Second District voters vote at Lakeview School, 711 Marion Ave.
  • Third District voters vote at City Hall, 2424 15th Ave.
  • Fourth District voters vote at Rawson Elementary, 1410 Rawson Ave.
  • Not sure what district you live in? Here is a map.
  • Don’t forget: Voter ID is now in effect.

Check out more details on the city’s elections web page … and look for more information on local results from South Milwaukee Blog later tonight or Wednesday morning.

You will note: I have joined with a number of other suburban mayors to endorse Chris Abele for Milwaukee County executive. I like Sen. Larson and would gladly endorse him in another run for Senate. But I proudly stand behind Chris Abele in this race.

Why do I want four more years?

Chris has been good for the South Shore and South Milwaukee, and I’m proud to support him for a second term. He has restored fiscal discipline and accountability to county government, while also driving increased efficiency in how the county delivers its services. Chris is unafraid to drive big ideas to solve big problems. From working to end chronic homelessness to stepping up to invest in cleaner watersheds and our parks, he is committed to making Milwaukee County a better place. And he doesn’t do it alone. Chris values partnerships, and he has led the way in driving cooperation among communities. Chris believes we’re all in this together. So do I.

Open Thread: What Are You Seeing At The Polls?

Just wondering what you’re encountering out there …

Post your comments below!

(And check back here later for full local results.)

Update: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel spoke with a poll worker at Divine Mercy School in this article

At Divine Mercy School in South Milwaukee, chief Jean Ruka said there were many absentee ballots and an influx of new voters.

“Many new registrations, which is good,” Ruka said. “People who have never voted before, some of them over 40 (years old) which was impressive that they finally found a reason to vote.”

Ruka said she thought voters were better informed than usual this year and were coming in with the required documents.

It’s Election Day: Vote!

No reminder needed, but here it is anyway: Tuesday is election day, and I hope everyone reading this blog will do their democratic duty and vote.

Here are some particulars:

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Not sure where to vote? Check out the district map here … and remember that all First District voters now vote at Divine Mercy School, 695 College Ave., and not the library.
  • Check out a sample ballot here.

Your patience is appreciated, as I’m betting there will be lines, even though the city clerk’s office has been proactive in adding staff to help with the expected large turnout: 80 poll workers in all, in addition to two coming in for lunch and supper breaks. Extra staff has also been added to the actual clerk’s office, and more than a dozen South Milwaukee High School students are volunteering to do their part.

Learn more on the city’s elections page, and be sure to check back to South Milwaukee Blog Tuesday night for local election returns.

See you at the polls!

Election Day Open Thread

It’s Election Day, and, whether it’s Republican, Democrat or neither, all I ask is that you do your civic duty and vote.

I’m opening this thread to take comments on the various local, regional and national races on the ballot.

Who got your vote on Tuesday? Who didn’t get your vote? Why?

I’d also like to know what you’re seeing out there. Long lines? Issues at the polling places? Been receiving a few too many robocalls the past few days?

Post your comments below (and please keep it constructive) …

Quick Election Primer: Vote On Tuesday!

Tuesday is election day, so please do your duty as a citizen and vote.

Here’s a quick primer of what to expect:

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m
  • Not sure where you vote? See a map here.
  • The only contested local race on the ballot is for South Milwaukee School Board. See candidate summaries here and vote in the poll on the right side of this page.
  • However, Mayor Tom Zepecki, seeking a fourth term, is going up against two declared write-in candidates: Michael Moeller and Todd Lorino. Moeller is also vying for the First District aldermanic seat currently held by Frank Van Dusen III.
  • You can see sample ballots on the city website here.
  • You don’t need to bring your photo ID to the polling place after all, thanks to a recent court ruling, but you will still need to sign the polling book before voting.

Also, be sure to check South Milwaukee Blog for election results later Tuesday night.

See you at the polls!

More On (2 Of) The 3 School Board Candidates

Three people are vying for two seats on the South Milwaukee School Board on Tuesday: incumbents David Maass and Kathleen Molus and challenger Sophia Williams.

Not sure who to support? I asked all three candidates for some information about themselves, their reasons for running and their thoughts on the some of the key issues. So far, Kathee Molus and Sophia Williams have responded.

Click on their names below to learn more …

I will post Maass’ information as soon as I get it.

Also, I’m interested to see who will receive your vote. Check out the new poll!

Also, Molus has a campaign website here.

Decision 2012: Little Competition In South Milwaukee

Uncontested races have become the norm in South Milwaukee in recent years — and that won’t change this April.

All candidates running for city office will run unopposed, as the 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for prospective candidates to declare their intentions to run and submit the necessary signatures came and went with no challengers stepping up.

So here is who you will see on the April 3 ballot:

  • Mayor: Tom Zepecki
  • City Clerk: Jim Shelenske
  • City Treasurer: Karen Skowronski
  • City Attorney: Joseph Murphy
  • Municipal Judge: William Fenger
  • 1st District Alderman: Fran Van Dusen III

You’ll recall that Frank, appointed to his seat this summer to replace Mike Karbowski, must run for the seat and the chance to serve a one-year term. He will be up for re-election again with the rest of the aldermen in April of 2013.

The South Milwaukee School Board will see some competition in April, as incumbents David Maass and Kathleen Molus and challenger Sophia Williams vie for two seats. I will post more information on this race in coming days and weeks.

At the county level, Supervisor Pat Jursik, who represents South Milwaukee, is also running unopposed (as is County Executive Chris Abele).

Frankly, I’m surprised at the lack of competition at the city level, especially in the political climate were in — and given the rancor surrounding the Walmart debate last fall. There was so much anger over that issue — along with threats of ballot challenges and recalls — that I was certain that that votes taken by the council (and mayoral support) would lead to at least one candidate for mayor (and perhaps a couple of the other seats).

I was wrong.

In  a way, that’s disappointing. I think competition is a good thing. It makes everyone better.

Of course, I’d like to know what you think. Post your comments below!
