South Milwaukee Sports Update: Beyond Football

Some South Milwaukee sports news beyond the football field … thanks for the update from Ante Udovicic.

ROCKET MARCHING BAND

The Rocket Marching Band has had a successful competition season this Fall. Their season started with a 3rd place finish in AAA band competition at Waukesha South on September 28th. Back-to-back competitions were held October 5 at Greendale and October 6 at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, where the Rocket Marching Band earned their highest score in competition ever at Greendale, and finished in 2nd place at both competitions.  This year’s show, How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, is a favorite among audiences.  Their full competition show will be performed at the last home football game for Homecoming on October 11th, followed by a final competitive performance at the WSMA State Marching Band competition at UW-Whitewater on Saturday, October 19th.  The performance time at Whitewater is 6:00pm.  Details on admission fees and band schedules are available at the WSMA website.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Rockets had their final home match of the season last week and it produced their most exciting win when they came back from a 2-1 deficit to win in 5 games! Great job Rockets. Good luck today in Pewaukee and on Saturday at the Brookfield East tournament!

GIRLS TENNIS

Congratulations to Ines Hoxha (12) & Kristen Bizub (12) on taking 3rd at #1 doubles in the Woodland Conference! Congratulations toAmber Bizub (11) & Chidimma Ozodi (11) as well for taking 3rd at #3 doubles! Great job girls, and great job by the team finishing in 7th place in the Woodland just 4 points out of 4th place!

CROSS COUNTRY

Here are the runners who broke 17 minutes for the girls this past Saturday at the Purgold Invitational (Sheridan Park). The 2 times are their overall time and then their pace per mile. The Girls took 3rd overall!

And here is an alumni update …

TAYLOR ZAESKE (2013)

See below for a cool update about 2013 SM Alum Taylor Zaeske and former GVB standout and who is the ECAC Girls’ Volleyball Player-of-the-Week for the 2nd week in-a-row! Pretty great start to her college volleyball career I would say. Way to go Taylor!

ALY PINKOS (2010)

Aly was named to the Midwest Women’s LaCrosse Conference All-Academic Team in July, 2013. While we don’t have LaCrosse here, Aly was a great athlete at SM as a #1 tennis player, basketball player and starting pitcher in softball. Nice job Aly!

TREY McKINNEY-JONES (2008)

Trey took part in the Milwaukee Bucks Fan Fest last Saturday and played in the 24 minute scrimmage. Trey was 0-2 from the field, but pulled down 5 rebounds and had an assist and showed that he can certainly play in the league. Anyone want to guess who the last player (long after any other player was out there) was out on the court after the scrimmage ended signing autographs? Yep, that would be Trey. A Bucks person had to walk up to get him to stop signing and head back to the locker room, otherwise Trey might have been there for 20 more minutes.

Where Are They Now? More South Milwaukee Athlete Alumni Updates

Thanks to Ante Udovicic for doing the leg work and sending these along … enjoy!

Natalie Marlowe (class of 2008)
Natalie was a multi-time all-conference basketball player for the Rockets, and was a standout volleyball and softball player and an honor student as well! This fall, she was hired as the new assistant women’s basketball coach at Hendrix College in Arkansas.  Natalie recently graduated with honors from Chicago State University following a successful playing career with the Division I Cougars.

During her career at Chicago State, Natalie appeared in 116 games, recording 806 points, 422 rebounds, 386 assists and 171 steals as a four-year starter at guard/forward. She is going to have a wonderful career as a coach!

Steve Bartlein (class of 2008)
Steve was recently selected by his over 30 teammates as Team Captain for the UW Whitewater baseball team. Fantastic accomplishment, and for those that know Steve, there should be zero surprise that he received this honor.

Rich Galewski (class of 2004) & Nathan Marlowe (class of 2005)
Both Rich & Nathan had great baseball careers at South Milwaukee and have gone on to the collegiate coaching ranks, joining the UW-Platteville coaching staff. Rich recently was the freshman baseball coach at Greendale High School and Nathan recently graduated from Edgewood College, where he finished with the 5th most wins in school history as a pitcher (and he turns 26 today – Happy Birthday Nathan!)

Courtney Susedik (class of 2004)
Courtney ran in the 2011 Boston Marathon . She finished in the top 3% of women . Also, she was in the Lakefront Marathon in 2011 and finished took 14th, finishing the 26.2 miles race in 3 hrs. & 16 min. Having seen her running through all kinds of ridiculous weather on the streets of SM, I am sure she has run plenty of more races since then as well. Courtney was on the Track and Cross team while she was at SMHS.

Emily Wesley (class of 2008)
Emily was a 4-year varsity basketball player as a Rocket, and ended up winning 4 conference championships as part of the Concordia Women’s Basketball team. She is now the Varsity Assistant Girls Basketball coach at Nicolet High School! Another former Rocket who was tailor-made to coach!

Jake Zdrojewski (class of 2011)
Jake played baseball and football at South Milwaukee, so why change things now. Jake is also playing baseball and football at Lawrence University! One college sport is tough enough!
