Firefighters Battle Blaze At Vacant South Milwaukee Home

From the South Milwaukee Fire Department …

At approximately 3:43 AM this morning (Sunday, Nov. 30), SMFD rec’d a 9-1-1 call reporting a house fire at 509 Madison Avenue. Upon arrival of SMFD units, light to moderate smoke was found issuing from the basement and 1st floor of a two-story residential dwelling.  SMPD units were already on scene and could not confirm the presence of any occupants, so a hoseline was stretched to the interior and a primary search was conducted while a fire in the basement was extinguished.  Additional arriving mutual aid companies were assigned to search the rest of the building.  All searches were negative, however, fire was also located on the first floor and extinguished.  Overhaul was conducted and all areas of potential fire spread checked for extension.  Damage to the building was limited to one room on the first floor and a small area of the basement. The fire is currently under investigation by SMFD and SMPD investigators.  No injuries were reported.

No One Hurt In Frigid House Fire

From South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

Please keep the family impacted by this fire in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the firefighters who battled the fire in freezing cold temperatures.

At approximately 10:10 this morning, SMFD responded to a report of a roof fire at 727 Madison Avenue. Upon arrival, light smoke was seen issuing from the attic area of the house. Further investigation revealed a small fire burning under the insulation in the attic. Hoselines were stretched into the attic to extinguish the fire and a lengthy overhaul process ensued to remove all the damaged insulation. Fire damage was isolated to a small area of the attic with minor water damage resulting to the ceiling below where the fire was burning. The American Red Cross was requested to the scene to assist the occupants with housing since the furnace was placed out of service due to wiring leading to it being damaged in the fire. No injuries were reported.

Weather conditions at the time of the fire were very cold at 17 degrees with steady winds at 10+ mph resulting in wind chills near zero. Unfortunately, winter weather is upon us.

No Injuries Reported In Molten Iron Spill At Appleton Electric

From South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

At approximately 9:12PM this evening, SMFD rec’d a telephone direct call and a 9-1-1 call for smoke in the building at EGS Appleton Foundry, 2105 5th Avenue. Upon the arrival of SMFD units, heavy smoke was issuing from the building that houses their iron furnaces and EGS Appleton personnel on scene reported that one of these furnaces, which use high-voltage induction coils to melt iron for their manufacturing process, had developed a leak and spilled some or all of its molten iron into a below grade pit beneath the furnace. The pit contains high voltage electrical equipment, hydraulic lines, and water lines for cooling and runs beneath all five of the furnaces that are in this particular area of the foundry. Due to the potential for an escalating incident, a Working Still and MABAS Box Alarm was called bringing in our mutual aid partners. As a precaution, hoselines were laid out and the sprinkler system connected to. Additional EGS Appleton personnel arrived on scene and, after consulting with SMFD Command personnel, the electrical service and water supply to the involved furnace were disconnected, further stabilizing the situation. A dewatering effort was then initiated to remove a buildup of water in the below grade pit and the furnace was monitored for changes in its condition. No injuries were reported and the cause of the release has yet to be identified.

More On Wednesday’s South Milwaukee Fire

1213 Exterior Distant Submitted1213 Exterior Porch 1213 Exterior BC CornerFrom South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter … please keep everyone impacted in your prayers.

At approximately 1140AM this morning, South Milwaukee Dispatch received several 9-1-1 calls reporting a house fire at 1213 Rawson Avenue. The house is a duplex, with a total of 9 occupants residing in it. A “Working Still”, which brings in our first alarm level of mutual aid, was called immediately based on the information of the callers. First arriving South Milwaukee Fire Department units encountered significant fire on the east side of the house extending up the siding and exposing the 2nd floor and attic. In addition, a large pine tree that was very near the house was burning adding to the amount of fire and smoke. Initial reports were that all occupants were out of the house.

Fire suppression efforts were first directed at stopping the spread of the fire on the exterior of the house and then immediately re-directed to the interior where a quick knock down of the fire was accomplished. The fire had gained a considerable headway and was burning in the walls and into the attic, thus requiring an extensive amount of overhaul. A 2nd MABAS Box Alarm was called for additional firefighters and to staff our station in the event of subsequent calls. One additional EMS call was received during the incident and handled by a mutual aid ambulance. No injuries were reported at the fire, however, two pets perished in the fire and another two are unaccounted for.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene and is assisting the family with their needs. Fire Investigators remain on the scene attempting to identify the origin and cause.

Another South Milwaukee House Fire — And, Again, No Injuries

710 Marshall - 1 710 Marshall - 2From South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

At approximately 6:36PM this evening, SMFD rec’d a 9-1-1 call for a house fire at 701 Marshall Avenue.  Upon arrival of SMFD units, smoke was observed coming from the second floor windows.  The sole male occupant of the single-family residence had self-evacuated prior to our arrival.  Crews entered the building and discovered a fire burning in a bathroom on the second floor.  The entire second floor, with the exception of two bedrooms to which the doors were closed, suffered extensive smoke damage. The bathroom suffered damage from the fire, as well as damage from the water used to extinguish the fire. The first floor suffered moderate smoke and water damage. Due to the damage, the occupant was told he could not stay in the house this evening and was offered assistance from the American Red Cross, which he refused stating he had family he could rely on.

The fire was contained to the second floor bathroom.  The probable cause of the fire is careless use of smoking materials based on statements made by the male occupant. No injuries were reported.

Thanks to our firefighters for their continued service, keeping us safe from harm.

(And thanks to Working Still Photos for the images.)

Fire Damages Michigan Avenue Home

1725 Michigan (1)From the South Milwaukee Fire Department …

At approximately 5:14PM last evening (Tuesday, June 10), SMPD Dispatch rec’d a telephone call from a male caller who stated he needed a fire engine at 1725 Michigan Avenue and hung up the phone.  Without knowing the exact nature of the call or even if an emergency existed, SMFD responded with an engine to investigate.  While responding, Capt. McCoy could see a column of smoke rising into the sky in the area of the call and immediately requested that the level of response be upgraded to a Working Still for a structure fire.  The Working Still level brings in assistance from our mutual aid partners.  Upon their arrival, the encountered a single-family Capt Cod style house with heavy smoke “pushing” from the attic.  Hoselines were deployed to attack the fire while additional personnel and equipment arrived and an SMFD attack crew made their way into the 2nd floor and attic and extinguished the fire.  No injuries were reported.  Damage to the attic and 2nd floor was significant.  As can be seen in the attached photos, the house was being re-roofed at the time and both the workers and the homeowners reported that their 60-amp electrical service repeatedly blew fuses when the contractor’s air compressor kicked in.  The fire remains under investigation by SMFD Lt. Frost, but involvement of the electrical system cannot be ruled out absent a detailed examination by a qualified electrical professional.

“Torpedos” Found In South Milwaukee?

Torpedos - Box

TorpedosFrom South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

In another one of those “nothing ever surprises me” moments . . . we had a citizen stop in and report that he was helping a 90-year old friend clean his garage out and was given a cigar box that the 90-year old had hand-written “Danger” and “Torpedos” on and the box contained some type of explosives.  I’ve attached the pictures.  The kicker was that the guy had them in the trunk of his car and transported them to the front of the firehouse without knowing exactly what he was dealing with.  Luckily, I had dealt with similar items in the past at Caterpillar when they found boxes of them while cleaning out an old warehouse.  I removed them from the trunk of the citizens car and placed them behind the fire station for safe storage.  I then called the Southeastern Wisconsin Threat Analysis Center (STAC) which is a cooperative law enforcement group co-located with Milwaukee Police Dept’s Intelligence Fusion Center downtown, and requested they notify MPD’s Bomb Squad (that’s whom I dealt with last time). A Lt. from MPD called me shortly after and arranged to come out to pick them up.  He happened to be the same guy I dealt with during the Caterpillar incident.  In the end, they may or may not have been dangerous . . . it all depends how they are handled and what type of shape they are in. The Lt. stated that he would take them back for safe storage and eventual disposal when they destroy all of their confiscated explosives.

As a side note, these “torpedos” were used by the railroad (and by Bucyrus on their crane rails) to signify trouble or get the operators attention when the rail car or crane wheels passed over them.  They were affixed to the tracks with the wires that are protruding out of them (see the pictures). While they were not meant to harm anyone, we are told that they are extremely loud and can cause hearing damage and injuries to anyone handling them.

About Our Newest Firefighter Appointee

You may have seen this item on JSOnline — a story about one of the city’s newest firefighters.

The South Milwaukee Police and Fire Commission appointed Nathan Fager to the role of firefighter on May 13, and the City Council will vote on recognizing that appointment at its meeting Tuesday night. Mr. Fager is expected to start with the SMFD on June 1.

I stand behind the selection made by the PFC, which, per state statute, handles all police and fire hiring, discipline, etc., so as to remove politics from the process. The PFC, department and others fully vetted Mr. Fager prior to his appointment and were assured by a number of Milwaukee department officials that, while he was assigned to the station in question as a probationary firefighter, he was not part of the vandalism, nor did he witness it.

Moreover, Mr. Fager was a highly decorated member of the Milwaukee Police Department before seeking to move to the fire department, and he was at the top of his MFD Fire Academy class, well-regarded by instructors. He also went through our very comprehensive employment process, which includes a written exam, psychological evaluation, interviews and a background investigation.

I wish Mr. Fager well in joining a first-class department.

South Milwaukee Fire Department Files Annual Report

Check out the report here, and learn more about the department, its people, and its work in keeping our community safe.

From it …

Once again, the members of the South Milwaukee Fire Department demonstrated their commitment to providing an exceptionally high level of service and standard of coverage with the limited resources at hand.

Call volume remained relatively stable during 2013 with a slight increase in the number of emergency medical service (EMS) calls. This increase is something that is being realized across our country as the demographics of our society change to reveal an aging population. While the number of incidents classified as “building fires” was less, the number of actual working fires increased. Our department requested mutual aid from our neighbors for 7 working structure fires in 2013. Dollar loss from these fires remained relatively unchanged when compared to 2012. Unfortunately, the fire department experienced its first fire fatality in a residential house fire in over 10 years in a fire that occurred on December 21st in a single-family home that claimed the life of an 80-year male. The cause of this fire remains undetermined.

Improving Fire Service Through Cooperation

Fire agreement signing“As a result of this new agreement, each community will be analyzing its fire and emergency response plans and determining whether neighboring communities might have resources closer to an emergency than the home communities’ resource in order to provide a rapid response to critical emergencies,” said Greendale Fire Chief Tim Saidler, the President of the Milwaukee County Association of Fire Chiefs.

Here is the press release for the initiative, which area mayors and village presidents signed earlier today at the Intergovernmental Cooperation Council meeting in West Allis.

(That’s me signing in the photo.)

For us, this agreement essentially formalizes something we’ve done for years — partnering with nearby communities to fight fires and provide emergency medical response. But it doesn’t hurt to put this in writing … and potentially find new approaches to make these partnerships even stronger.

Garage And Brush Fire Overnight

509 Marquette-2Here is the update from Fire Chief Joe Knitter on the fire Saturday morning on and near Marquette Avenue …

At 4:48AM, SMFD was dispatched to a possible brush fire on the lake bank at the end of Menomonee Avenue at Lake Shore Blvd.  While responding, the SMFD engine was notified by Dispatch of a garage fire in the alley behind 509 Marquette Avenue.  The SMFD engine re-directed to that fire and encountered a detached one-car garage fully involved in fire.  While responding from home, I then responded to investigate the brush fire call and discovered a large area of brush burning down the bank and spreading rapidly due to the winds coming off the lake.  I requested a Cudahy engine that was responding to the garage fire to respond to my location and had them extinguish the fire on the lake bank.  An Oak Creek engine was directed to staff our station during these fires.

Investigators remain on the scene at the garage fire at this time.  However, due to the destruction, identifying a positive cause will be very difficult.  No injuries were reported. The garage and its contents are a total loss.  In addition, the vinyl siding on the house at 509 Marquette, the garage at 511 Marquette and the garage across the alley at 510 Montana Avenue suffered damage from radiant heat.
