The best week of the year to be a South Milwaukeean. Here’s a schedule and a press release.

The South Milwaukee Heritage Days Parade team is looking for your financial help … and I can’t think of a better event to get behind.
The parade is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, and it’s quickly becoming one of the largest in the area.
From the parade committee …
The Parade will be bigger and better in almost all facets. More music including the South Shore Drill Team from Chicago (see You Tube). More Veterans. More special guests including a tribute to the 3 past Mayors, and Green Bay Packers Super Fan St. Vincent and his 1957 Packard Packermobile, and all 5 Brewers Racing Sausages! All of this comes at a bigger and better cost however, and the Committee is asking you to help. You can contribute individually or pool your resources. We have a lot of ground to make up in 8 short weeks and welcome any financial relief. We are now a 501(c)3 so your contributions should be tax deductible. This Committee has almost doubled the size of the Parade in 2 short years. … Thanks in advance and keep up the fight.
Find more details on how to give here. And look for 50-50 raffle tickets around town.
And a big thank you to all of the parade committee members. This is truly a year-round effort, but their efforts will pay off with a terrific event as they take it to new heights in 2015.
Please support them in their work. It’s an investment in what makes South Milwaukee uniquely South Milwaukee.

So, Heritage Days 2014 are over. What a week!
The DARE Golf Outing. St. Luke’s Ice Cream Social. Firehouse Spaghetti Dinner. Evening on the Avenue. Heritage Days Parade. Great Duck Race. South Milwaukee Lionsfest.
I had the pleasure of attending all of these, and each was special, true celebrations of our great city.
But let’s keep in mind that none of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of dozens (hundreds?) of volunteers. I know time is tight and demands are high, but South Milwaukeeans always seem to come through, and not just during Heritage Week.
To all of our volunteers, I say, “thank you.” Your efforts are always appreciated.

Night one of South Milwaukee Lionsfest is in the books … but there’s a lot more on the agenda this weekend.
Saturday features the annual Heritage Days Parade starting at 11 a.m. It starts around 8th and Milwaukee, heads west to 16th, then north to Lionsfest. Look for me and the family on the firetruck!
Then it’s the Friends of the Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse Great Duck Race at 2 p.m. near 15th and Milwaukee Avenues … and the last night of Drama at the Depot, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the South Milwaukee train station.
Lionsfest continues Saturday afternoon and on Sunday, with Family Day. Check out the full schedule above. I’ll be bartending Saturday night and serving food on Sunday.
In other words, it’s a full weekend. Hope to see you out and about!

Heritage Days 2013 wrapped up this evening with Lionsfest.
From the firehouse spaghetti dinner and Evening on the Avenue to Lionsfest and my first time at the Great Duck Race, my family and I had a great time this week.
Of course, I’d like to know what you think.
Post your comments below … and join me in thanking all of the dedicated volunteers who make Heritage Days happen every year. It takes hundreds of people to pull this off, and let’s not take them for granted.

The weather improved, and Lionsfest got off to a good start Friday night with the fish fry, car cruise, all-South Milwaukee High School reunion and more.
(And I sold a fair amount of pull tabs.)
Saturday and Sunday bring more great food, music and activities at 16th and Rawson Avenues … and, of course, the annual Heritage Days parade. The parade starts at 11 a.m. around Eighth and Milwaukee Avenues, heads west down Milwaukee, then north on 16th Avenue to Lionsfest. I’ll be handing out flyers promoting the blog, so be sure to say hi.
And don’t forget about the Great Duck Race presented by the Friends of the Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse. It starts at 2 p.m. at 15th and Milwaukee Avenues.
Check out a full schedule in my previous post.
Enjoy the weekend!

From the vantage point of the soda table — where Trinity Lutheran Church volunteers served thirsty guests — Wednesday’s South Milwaukee Fire Department Spaghetti Dinner looked to be a huge success.
And South Milwaukee’s Heritage Days celebration is just getting started.
Thursday, it’s Evening on the Avenue. Friday through Sunday, it’s Lionsfest. Saturday, it’s the Heritage Days parade and the duck race.
My previous post has a full schedule. Hope to see you around the next few days!
(In fact, I’ll be walking the parade route handing out flyers promoting this blog. Say hi if you see me.)

Update: An earlier version of this post had the wrong starting point listed for the Heritage Days parade. It will start where it always does, around Eighth and Milwaukee Avenues. Sorry for the error. Getting my parades mixed up 🙂
