Head To The Beach: Exciting News For Grant Park, And All Of South Milwaukee

Burgers, custard and beach volleyball – consider it three more reasons to head to Grant Park this summer.

Milwaukee County has agreed to a long-term contract with a partner that will bring beach volleyball to Grant Park this summer and beyond – and is closing in on a deal that will breathe new life into the concession space at the beach.

First, information on the concessionaire.

Ferch’s Beachside – owned by the same family behind Ferch’s Malt Shoppe & Grille in historic downtown Greendale – is planning to open early this summer and offer burgers, custard, beer and more. The owners are also doing extensive remodeling to the space, which hasn’t been used in more than five years.

On Tuesday, the county’s Parks, Energy & Environment Committee unanimously recommended approval of a long-term lease with Ferch’s, and the full Milwaukee County Board is expected to take up the issue at its April 24 meeting.

I spoke to Dale Ferchoff today, and he is excited to come to South Milwaukee.

Just feet away from the concession space, volleyball courts are already going up.

The county has already contracted with Chicago-based Cities and Sports to run the volleyball activities at the beach, which will include two-, four- and six-person men’s, women’s and co-ed leagues starting June 1. As many as 18 courts are planned, and they’ll be available for general public use when not used by leagues or tournaments.

  • Find more details on the volleyball here. League registration is now open, currently for teams looking to play on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • And here is more information on Ferch’s.

I want to thank Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik, County Executive Chris Abele, the Parks Department and other county officials for their work in bringing these additions to the beach, and for their support of the park overall. I’m proud to stand behind their efforts.

These are game-changing initiatives that will not only bring an energy to Grant Park not seen in years, but they will also lift our entire city. I can’t wait.

Of course, the beach additions are just two of the exciting things happening at Grant Park this summer and beyond. Check out my previous post for more on those.

Efforts include the repaving  the entire length of the Oak Leaf Trail in the park starting this year, and the Traveling Beer Garden, presented by Sprecher Brewing and Sprecher’s Restaurant and Pub, which is appearing at Grant Park’s Brown Pavilion (Picnic Area 5-6) June 16-28. There have also been environmental investments made, including a new rain garden near the beach, new trees throughout the park and bluff stabilization work.

Look for more details on these exciting developments soon, and spread the word!

Like My New Mayoral Facebook Page!

Update: The link should work now. If that link doesn’t work, you can also find my page at http://www.facebook.com/mayorerikbrooks.

A quick note about Facebook, since I know many of my readers are also Facebook friends …

I’ve added a new Facebook page devoted to my mayoral duties, and I encourage you to like it if you want to stay on top of city news, information and other happenings from around town.

For example, posts this week have included items on Tuesday’s election and my upcoming Meet the Mayor sessions. And I just posted information on National Public Health Week, and look for an update soon on a cool new local business.

Find the new Facebook page here, and invite your friends to like it, too.

(If that link doesn’t work, you can find my page at http://www.facebook.com/mayorerikbrooks.)

I’m keeping my personal Facebook, too, but I’m keeping it personal. So I’ve been “unfriending” people on it I don’t know personally — basically anyone who I don’t think would be interested in seeing pictures of my kids playing sports, my vacation escapades or my musings on the Brewers, Bucks and Badgers (as profound as they are).

Please don’t take offense … and rest assured you’ll see the same commitment to communication I’ve always had on my new mayoral page. Just don’t expect to hear about my trip to the Grand Canyon. Or the fish I caught.

Remembering A Talented South Milwaukee Musician

Nicolas Sluss-Rodionov, the chorus manager and operations assistant for the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, has died from injuries sustained in a car accident last week.

The South Milwaukee High School graduate left quite a mark.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story

“The chorus is grieving mightily. He was just a remarkable young man,” said Jackie Drummer, who knew Sluss-Rodionov when he was a kid and encouraged him to apply to the music program at Carthage College in Kenosha.

Sluss-Rodionov had been a member of the MSO Chorus’ professional core since 2006 and four years ago was hired full time as operations assistant for the symphony, organizing and planning concerts. As chorus manager he coordinated auditions, handled seating on stage, managed the schedule and made sure the chorus had the correct music.

“Which is a unique skill to be able to juggle all that. Everyone was incredibly fond of him,” said MSO executive director Mark Niehaus. “He was always jovial and happy and he was always buzzing, he had a buzzing energy about him.”

Sluss-Rodionov didn’t start out as a singer. He played piano and French horn at South Milwaukee High School. When he graduated in 2000, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do until Drummer encouraged him to apply to Carthage. Sluss-Rodionov was part of a group of kids that hung out at Drummer’s house with her children. After a great audition on piano and French horn, Sluss-Rodionov was accepted into Carthage’s music program. …

Sluss-Rodionov was organist, vocal soloist and choir section leader at First Congregational Church in Wauwatosa. He performed with numerous musical ensembles including the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, Bel Canto Chorus, Master Singers of Milwaukee, Present Music and the Music Institute of Chicago Chorale.

For the MSO Chorus, Sluss-Rodionov was known for starting his announcements at rehearsals with a joke, often beginning with a quip at the expense of the sopranos and working his way through the sections. When the chorus performed “Alexander Nevsky,” his father brought a large pot of borscht to feed the singers rehearsing the Russian musical piece. A few weeks ago, Sluss-Rodionov wore a green mustache during rehearsal in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

Please keep Nicolas’ family and friends in your prayers. And post your memories below.

South Shore Headlines

A man wrongfully convicted in the 1995 killing of a South Milwaukee High School student is getting $6.5 million from the City of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting.

Here is the story. From it …

Chaunte Ott filed a federal civil rights lawsuit after his release in 2009, claiming that Milwaukee police detectives pressured witnesses into testifying falsely that they had been with Ott during the murder of Jessica Payne, a 16-year-old runaway.

“Lawsuits based on events occurring nearly two decades ago present hurdles that make defending such cases exceptionally difficult,” read a statement released by the city late Tuesday.

The case had been scheduled to begin trial in Milwaukee federal court last week. A similar suit from another man wrongly convicted of killing someone later linked to Ellis remains pending.

“Our client is obviously not going to get back the 13 years that were unjustly taken from him, but we appreciate the city’s agreement to provide fair compensation,” said Jon Loevy, one of Ott’s attorneys. “Chaunte continues to rebuild his life, working and enjoying time with his family.”

Ott, now 40, won his freedom with the help of the Wisconsin Innocence Project, which began working on his case years earlier. In 2007, it was learned that DNA taken from the Payne crime scene did not match Ott or the two men who had testified against him, both of whom later recanted.

It did match DNA taken from two other murdered women, one of whom Ellis was later convicted of killing. Still, it took two more years for Ott to leave prison. …

At the time prosecutors declined to retry Ott, Payne’s stepmother said she still believed he was responsible, though she didn’t expect prosecutors to try him again. A retrial would have been complicated not only by the DNA evidence but also by the fact that two key state witnesses had recanted the testimony and one had died.

The Payne case remains an open investigation.

And here are some other South Shore headlines …

Also, County Supervisor Pat Jursik has published her new newsletter, and NOW has a new police blotter.

No One Hurt In South Milwaukee Duplex Fire

Maple Fire Revised

From the South Milwaukee Fire Department … please keep these residents in your prayers.

At approximately 4:40PM this afternoon, SMFD responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire in the lower unit of a duplex at 1821 Maple Street.  Arriving SMFD units forced entry into the lower unit and encountered heavy smoke causing zero visibility conditions and a fire burning in the kitchen and extending down a hallway.  Crews extinguished the fire but not before extensive heat and smoke damage occurred on the first floor.  The fire was discovered by the upstairs tenant whose smoke alarm is interconnected with the one in the lower unit.  Once his detector sounded, he went to investigate and saw flames in the kitchen of the lower unit through the front window.  No one was home in the lower unit at the time of the fire.  Damaged was extensive to the first floor with moderate smoke damage to the 2nd floor.  Thankfully, the 2nd floor tenant took the time to close his door when leaving.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and the American Red Cross has been requested to the scene to assist the families.

Introducing … The South Milwaukee Food Truck Festival!

Another cool new event for our city … and it’s coming up quickly.

The area’s top food trucks are planning a stop in downtown South Milwaukee.

I’m excited to announce the first-ever South Milwaukee Food Truck Festival, presented by the Milwaukee Food Truck Alliance. The event — planned for noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, on 11th and Milwaukee Avenues, site of the farmers’ market — will feature a number of the area’s top trucks and live music throughout the afternoon.

Already committed to attend: Streetza Pizza, Gouda Girls, Eats & Treats, Meat on the Street, Simmer, and Hattie’s, with more to come.

The event will go before the city council for formal approval this Tuesday.

Mark your calendars, save your appetite, and help me spread the word.

This will be a huge hit. Besides great food, these trucks have huge followings and fans from across the area that have yet to discover our fair city. We’re expecting there will good spillover business to our existing downtown stores.

And this is just the start to our downtown summer. From this to the farmers’ market to the return to the outdoor movies to Evening on the Avenue to the Heritage Days Parade — and more — downtown South Milwaukee will be hopping in 2015.

Look for a full list of downtown events coming soon.

One more note: To get a sense of how big these food trucks are and the reach they have, consider the award-winning Streetza Pizza. Owned by South Milwaukee resident Scott Baitinger, it has 12,500 Twitter followers. And that’s just one truck.
