The Food Trucks Are Coming Back!

Food truck 7 Food truck 6 Food truck 2 Food truck 4

Update: The hours are now noon to 3 p.m. It’s reflected below.

It’s Food Truck Carnival time again in downtown South Milwaukee!

We’re bringing back the gathering of food trucks on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the site of the South Milwaukee Downtown Market on 11th Avenue between Milwaukee and Madison.

Great food from some of the area’s top trucks will be served from noon to 3 p.m. that day. Live music is also planned.

I’m excited to see this event return, and we learned a lot from the first one in May.

  • First, we’ll have more trucks this time — 10 committed so far, with hopefully a few more to come. Stay tuned for a list.
  • We’re also spacing the trucks out more, down the entire stretch of 11th Avenue, so lines should be more defined. (However, I can’t say if lines will be shorter; these trucks are very popular).
  • We’re also asking the trucks to bring more food, so they don’t run out as quickly.

I can’t wait for this. The last event drew thousands of people downtown, and I’m hoping for a big crowd this time, as we look to bring more and more of these community- and business-building events to our city center.

Now Open: Ferch’s Beachside

Ferch's 8 Ferch's 9 Ferch's 5 Ferch's 3 Ferch's 1

Good things — like mouth-watering burgers, custard and beer — come to those who wait.

And the wait is over for Ferch’s Beachside.

The new Grant Park Beach concessionaire served its first burgers, custard and beer at Saturday night’s Beach Walk, and it was a hit. (My family and I were a few of their early customers.)

Please join me in welcoming Dale, Betty, Jeff and all the Ferchoffs and their employees to town.

They plan to open on select weekend days in September, and then hit it hard in 2016 and beyond. Check their Facebook page for more details on specific hours and offerings.

This is an exciting development for Grant Park and the entire city, another sign of the progress we’re seeing when it comes to attracting sustainable new business to South Milwaukee. Let’s get behind it!

Garbage, Fence Fire Reported Sunday Night; Cause Appears Accidental

From South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …
At approximately 11:15 last night, SMFD responded to a report of a garage fire in the 2300 Blk. of 9th Avenue.  While responding, SMPD arrived on scene and confirmed the fire at which time SMFD requested assistance from our neighboring departments.  Arriving SMFD units found a fire involving several garbage and recycling carts and a privacy fence extending to an adjoining shed and the house directly north of the fire property.  Due to the concrete block construction of the garage, damage was minimal. Witness statements were taken and the cause appears to be accidental.  No injuries were reported.

Making South Milwaukee A More Beautiful Place

The city’s new Beautification Committee is a reality.

The city council this week appointed the following eight citizens to this new group, which is tasked with promoting, encouraging, and working to enhance the beauty of our fair city. They are:

  • Betsy Abert
  • Cathy Bassett
  • Patti Bergeson
  • Paul Berens
  • Sue Hebner
  • Leah Manthey
  • Brian Morrison
  • Jim Shelenske

This is a great group that brings a lot of passion, hard work, skill and differing perspectives to the table.

We’ll look for the group to meet for the first time later this month and start its important work. And we may look to add a few alternates in coming weeks, as applications continue to come in.

Do you want to apply to join a city commission or board? Do so here.

Sunrise Plaza Update: New Owner For Shopping Center, As Ace Hardware Consolidates To Its South Milwaukee Location

Big news for Sunrise Plaza …

First, the center has been acquired by Secured Debt Investments of Coral Gables, Fla., at sheriff’s sale, paving the way for reinvestment in the property and potentially new tenants.

According to its website …

SDI is an investment management firm focusing on underperforming commercial real estate assets throughout the United States. …

We concentrate our acquisitions in distressed, under-performing commercial real estate loans and properties. Our infrastructure provides us with proprietary market knowledge, deal flow and relationships needed to execute our strategy. We implement a disciplined pricing methodology, containing clear exit strategies through a value-add based proposition.

Our highly skilled team of underwriters and acquisition specialists work hand in hand with our local service providers to evaluate and analyze each acquisition, giving us the local presence and knowledge needed to capitalize on opportunities throughout the country.

In other words, it sounds like a key goal of the new ownership is to fix up the center, lease it, and sell it.

Seigel-Gallagher is managing the property, and they tell me their plan is to improve some of the long-neglected vacant spaces at the center, with a focus on the 8,600 square-foot (divisible) retail space at the south end and 3,750 square-foot medical office space. Improvements to the exterior of the property are also planned, including repainting, landscaping, new lighting and updating the main building sign. They’ll also seek to secure long-term relationships with key tenants like Ace Hardware and the Sunrise Restaurant.

As this happens, Ace, the center’s biggest tenant, is making big changes of its own to secure its long-term future in South Milwaukee. You may have read about it in today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Dave Micale, the store’s owner, announced last week he was closing his Oak Creek location after 10 years and consolidating operations here. They will be adding inventory from the Oak Creek store to South Milwaukee over the next month, with its remaining staff also making the move.

Dave tells me the Oak Creek closure was a business decision based on a variety of factors, and that he is committed to continuing to serve South Milwaukee for the long term.

I’m so glad to hear that. Ace is a valued retailer in our fair city. They do business the right way, living up to their motto as “the helpful hardware place.” I love shopping local there and want them around for many years to come.

We need stores like this in South Milwaukee.

All in all, I view the Sunrise Plaza developments as a positive for South Milwaukee. After years of little investment in the center, a new owner is committed to making necessary improvements and increasing its value. And Ace is committing to maintaining its long and strong commitment to South Milwaukee, despite the closure of its Oak Creek store.

Of course, we’ll have to see where the future takes this. But I’m hopeful. It’s progress for Sunrise Plaza. Finally.

Rockets Win In More Ways Than One

Jordan

Jake Simuncak hit Lawrence Turner for touchdown pass in overtime, and Simuncak intercepted a pass on the next possession to seal a 20-14 South Milwaukee victory over West Allis Hale on Friday at Spaltholz Field.

But the real winner was Jordan Schroeder.

Jordan, who is battling cancer, was on the field for South Milwaukee’s first offensive play before being removed from the game to support the team from the sideline — and continue to provide inspiration for the Rockets.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel covered the story before Friday’s game. TV crews were also on hand to document it, including WDJT, WISN and WTMJ. (The image is from TMJ4.)

(By the way, South Milwaukee moved to 2-0 with the win, with a game at Whitnall up next on Friday. WISN has highlights.)

Redeveloping Highway 32

Some positive developments on our busiest street, north to south …

  • Burger King. I just heard from folks involved in this project, and here is the update on the location planned for the Walmart outlot: Groundbreaking is expected early this fall, with an opening this winter. I know a lot of people have been asking about this project, as the land remains undeveloped almost a year after the development was approved. It’s really nice to see them moving ahead with this. I can already taste my first Whopper.
  • Nomi Coffee. The new coffee house on at 513 N. Chicago Ave. is now serving food, with the kitchen open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The menu includes toasted ravioli, a turkey BLT, build-your-own grilled cheese, or a “Nomi Sandwich.” They’ve also repaved their parking lot in the last week.
  • Citgo. The new gas station at the corner of 10th and Manitoba opened last week, too.

So, really good momentum. And more to come!

Headlines: Fire, Police Departments Making A Difference, And More

Simple solutions can make a big difference too — and maybe even prevent cancer.

That’s the story behind the TMJ 4 report that aired last night on the South Milwaukee Fire Department’s newest safety tool — sanitizing wipes for their firefighters.

Check out the story here.

And here are some other local headlines …

NOW has published new police blotters here and here.

Also, the Milwaukee Post has published an article on the efforts to restore the Mill Pond and Oak Creek watershed. You can see it here. It provides a pretty accurate portrayal of the issue (although it calls us a village vs. a city).

In short, I’m excited for the progress we’re making toward a cleaner watershed, but we’re just getting started and we have a lot of work to do. The restoration study will help guide that work and get us that much closer to the long-term solutions we need to make the Oak Creek watershed something we can all be proud of again.

I want the city to be a partner in those efforts. And we have been.

Cleaning Up Our Roadways, One Tree Stump At A Time

The city continues to invest in urban forestry.

This time, it’s in stump grinding and removal.

The South Milwaukee City Council last Tuesday approved spending around $20,000 for the grinding of 196 tree stumps in street right of way and restoration of those areas. That includes 116 stumps from trees removed by property owners prior to 2014 — when ordinance changes stepping up the city’s ownership of street trees went into effect — and another 80 from trees removed by the Street Department in 2014 and 2015.

Removing dead and diseased trees like this is part of our ongoing commitment to this service, and we have a long ways to go, both in tree removal and replanting. But we’re making progress.

Removal will continue for years. A quick drive around town shows just how many dead or dying trees we have in the right of way in South Milwaukee.

And we’re making progress toward replanting.

Year one of the Arbor Day program was a big success, and we’ll bring it back in 2016.

We have to do more. The Beautification Committee will help.

One of its top duties will be to assist in tree planting efforts, including advising on a community tree management program (per Tree City USA requirements), coordinating an Adopt a Tree program for area residents, leading the Arbor Day celebration, and helping secure private funding for city tree planting efforts.

Want to join the committee? There is still time to apply. Please do so this week here.
