Improving The Health Of Our Community

I’m really proud of the work the South Milwaukee Health Department does to drive community healthy in our fair city. Consider this another example of how they’re bringing that promise to life.

The short story: The Health Department is joining others in the area in doing a community health assessment that will drive a community health improvement plan.

The goal: To make us all healthier.

To help, I ask that, if asked, you spend a few minutes completing the anonymous, random phone survey, providing input into your health-related behaviors. It’s valuable information that will feed the overall effort.

From the press release …

Hundreds of South Milwaukee residents may soon be contacted to participate in an important phone survey assessing the health of the community. Conducted every three years, the community health survey gathers information on health related behaviors from 400 anonymous, randomly selected residents.   Their responses, along with local and state public health data contribute to the South Milwaukee Health Department’s Community Health Assessment and helps guide its Community Health Improvement Plan.

“The survey provides valuable data for continued evaluation of community needs, and will help inform the health department, as well as other organizations in meeting the most pressing health needs of our community,” says Jacqueline Ove, Public Health Administrator “I encourage all South Milwaukee residents to support this meaningful research effort,” Ove adds. “The survey takes about 18 minutes and is completely anonymous. It’s important that we reach a good cross-section of the community, so whether they receive a call via cell phone or land line, I ask that residents take time to answer the survey questions.”

The survey is being conducted over the next few months by Management Decisions, an independent research firm. It focuses on issues such as access to health care, tobacco and alcohol use, diet, physical activity, cancer prevention, heart health, injury prevention, immunizations, communicable diseases, mental health and chronic disease. Similar surveys are being conducted at the same time across all 12 health departments in Milwaukee County, with support from Aurora Health Care, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Columbia St. Mary’s, Froedtert Health, and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. The findings will be compared with the 2012 community health survey to analyze health trends over the last three years, and will help:

  • Document the community’s health status related to the health priorities established by the state health plan.
  • Identify local health behaviors or risk factors that present opportunities for health promotion and health care cost reduction.
  • Track the success of community health improvement activities.

To learn more, also check out our annual health report, which provides a terrific report on progress we’ve made in community health over the years, and our five-year community health improvement plan. Really good stuff.

Guest Blog: Stand Up In Favor Of Our Local Schools!

A guest blog from South Milwaukee School Board member Doug Perry and Blaise Paul, the South Milwaukee School District director of business services …

The School District of South Milwaukee is once again being asked to do more with less.

For many years our expense increases outpaced our revenue ability.  The District had to make reductions, and over 50 teaching positions were eliminated, between 2003-2011.  In 2011, we had an unprecedented cut to our revenue (over 6% reduction).  The unprecedented reduction in revenue was accompanied by cost control measures that allowed us to unilaterally shift costs.  We cut benefits to staff to balance the loss of revenue.  The following three years were accompanied by revenue limit increases between half percent to one percent per year.  As we navigated through the minimal increases, we continued to reduce specific budgets and cut benefits to staff to balance the budget.

We are now being faced with a budget proposal that makes a half percent increase look like a windfall.  The Governor’s budget proposal includes a $460,000 reduction to our revenue ability for 2015-16.  We are at a point where after 12 years of eliminating positions, eliminating programs, cutting benefits and limiting wage increases, we will start impacting our students in a way that will not be easily reversed.

The School District of South Milwaukee is advocating for a $200 per pupil increase to the revenue limit and to not decrease our funding by $460,000 as the Governor has proposed.  Please go to the Business Office website to find out more information regarding the impact of the proposed budget on the School District of South Milwaukee. (http://www.sdsm.k12.wi.us/district/financialreports.cfm)

If possible, contact members of the State Joint Finance Committee, our local representatives and Governor Walker, and share the South Milwaukee Story with them and advocate for a $200 per pupil increase and to not reduce revenue to South Milwaukee Schools by $460,000. Draft letters and phone conversations developed by the district parent group can also be found on our website.  Legislative contact information can be found at: http://www.sdsm.k12.wi.us/cms_files/resources/Legislative%20Contacts.pdf

Thank you for your time and dedication to our Community!

I will add this: I 100% stand with our schools on this issue. We must invest in public education, and make a real commitment to adequately funding our local schools. It’s time for our governor and legislative leaders in Madison to put the partisanship aside and come together around common-sense solutions here.

The cuts can’t continue. They’re not sustainable, and their impact is real.

I am proud to send my two kids to Rawson Elementary School. And I always keep them front and center when I consider the issue of education funding. This is not just a local issue, it’s a household issue.

That’s why fixing our broken public education funding system is so critical.

Join our schools (and me) in advocating for solutions that adequately invest in public schools.

March Madness: Celebrating Our Proud Basketball Past

South Milwaukee has a proud basketball past. But don’t take my word for it.

Instead, listen to Tom Oates, a respected sports writer with the Wisconsin State Journal, who has put two Rocket basketball players on his all-WIAA State Tournament Team. The players should come as no surprise to South Milwaukee basketball historians …

Kurt Nimphius (Third Team)

Despite being one of the first truly athletic big men in the state tournament, Nimphius never strayed far from the basket on either end. As a result, he dominated the 1976 Class A tournament like few players ever have, leading South Milwaukee to three victories and a 25-0 season.

Nimphius scored 97 points, to this day the second-highest total ever in the tournament, in victories over heavyweights Milwaukee Washington, Madison West and Eau Claire Memorial. He also led the tournament with 40 rebounds. The Rockets started four role players around Nimphius, making his 30-point, 11-rebound effort in their 45-43 victory over coach Dick Bennett’s Old Abes in the title game even more remarkable. Nimphius hit a short jumper — his specialty — with 46 seconds left to break a 43-43 tie.

Nimphius played four years at Arizona State and was named All-Pac-10 as a senior. He also played eight seasons in the NBA.

Jay Schauer (Fifth Team)

Schauer was a sophomore when he led South Milwaukee to the 1952 state title. He never got the Rockets back to Madison during his stellar prep career, but he left a significant mark while he was there.

A smooth operator for a big man, Schauer scored 55 points and grabbed 56 rebounds in three games, both tournament bests. His 56 rebounds set a record that still stands more than 60 years later. In South Milwaukee’s 61-54 victory over Stevens Point in the final, Schauer scored 15 points and snared 26 rebounds, the latter another record that has never been matched.

Schauer played one season at Marquette before giving up the sport to concentrate on his studies.

And the tradition continues in recent years. Consider Austin Stueck. Here is an update from South Milwaukee Athletic Department …

AUSTIN STUECK (Class of 2012)

In a beginning of the season email, you were alerted to the fact that Austin was closing in on the 1,000 point plateau. Well, as the NACC Conference scoring leader this season at over 20 ppg he flew past that mark and now has over 1,350 points!

With his fantastic performance this season, the MSOE junior also became the first 2-time winner of the NACC Player of the Year award! Can’t wait to see what he does next year!

Congratulations Austin!!

As for this year’s team, the Rockets beat Bay View/Lifelong Learning but lost to Greendale in the regionals last week.

Public Works Update: 13th Avenue, Clark Avenue, Oak Creek Bridge Repairs

We continue to invest in our infrastructure in South Milwaukee. Some of the early projects for 2015 …

  • At our meeting last Tuesday, the city council approved spending $97,535 to repave 13th Avenue between Milwaukee and Marquette Avenues. Work is expected to be complete by the end of June.
  • Also on Tuesday, the council voted to spent $139,157 to replace the fascia below the bridge over Oak Creek along Milwaukee Avenue. If you’ve drive north on 15th Avenue toward Milwaukee in recent years — as I’m sure you have — I’m sure you’ve seen the large hole in the fascia below the bridge on the east side of the creek. The city will replace it and the other three walls with decorative precast panels. Work is expected to be complete by early June.
  • We’re also advertising for bids for repaving Clark Avenue, 5th to 9th Avenues.

Learn more about our engineering projects here.

I’ll keep you posted on more projects as construction season begins in earnest soon.

Rocket Power, Fluid Power

Some good news from the South Milwaukee School District, courtesy of Chris Daniels, work-based learning coordinator … really impressive stuff.

The Technology & Engineering Academy at South Milwaukee High School hosted another project competition on Tuesday, February 10th.   The students competed in the school’s first National Fluid Power Challenge. The goal of the project is for the students to apply the principles of fluid power through scientific explorations and an engineering capstone project.  The Challenge is sponsored by the National Fluid Power Association which awarded the school a $3,500 grant.

The students designed and constructed a prototype of a hydraulic arm capable of solving an engineering scenario requiring moving scale drums of rocket fuel to a safe location.  They also produced an engineering design portfolio followed by an oral presentation which was evaluated by university professors and fluid power industry professionals.  SMHS is the first school in the nation to compete in the Challenge at the high school level.

Volunteers and judges arrived from MSOE, Caterpillar, Poclain Hydraulics, Thomas-Magnete, Badger Meter, StemForward, and the National Fluid Power Association.  Awards were given for Best Teamwork, Best Challenge, Best Portfolio, Best Presentation, Best Design, and the overall winner of the competition.  The NFPA created a video of the event to be distributed to its national membership.  Four students have also been invited to present their projects at the International Technology & Engineering Educators Association conference on March 26th.

Police: South Milwaukee Man Arrested After Confronting Officers With Firearm

Yet another reason to thank you to our police officers for all they do …

From the South Milwaukee Department:

On Thursday February 26, 2015 at about 8:00pm the City of South Milwaukee Police Department was called to a home in the 3200 Block of 15th Avenue in the City of South Milwaukee, for a report of a man making threats to his family that he was going to “Commit Suicide by Cop”.  The callers further reported that the man making these threats was in possession of an improvised firearm fashioned from a BB gun and a shotgun shell.

Upon arrival of the officers they were confronted by the man at the front door.  The man was brandishing what was later determined to be a BB gun with a live shotgun shell affixed to it.  The man ignored orders to drop the item and surrender but did eventually throw the object down and walk out of the residence toward officers, while telling the officers to shoot him.  The man did not comply with further directions to be taken safely into custody and an electronic control devise (ECD/Taser) was deployed on the subject.  The man was then forced into handcuffs and taken into custody.  The man stated that he tried to fire the weapon at the officers but threw it down when it failed to go off.

The man continued to resist after he was taken into custody, kicking one officer in the chest. The man, a 23 year old resident of South Milwaukee, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for medical examination.  No officers were injured to the point of seeking medical attention.  This matter will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office for possible criminal charges.

An “Around The Corner” Night To Remember

McGivern and Lois ATC stars Carlos and RossyWhat a night!

Thanks to everyone who made Monday night’s “Around the Corner with John McGivern” premiere at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center a big success!

A special shoutout goes to all the volunteers who stepped up, especially Joan Lindstrom and Bryan Lorentzen, who led in planning and executing this complex event. The hard work was worth it.

I also say thanks to Jay Benkowski and Benkowski Properties, our event sponsors. We could not have done this without his support.

If you were there, I hope you had a great time. If you weren’t (or if you want to see the episode again), tune in at 7 p.m. this Thursday on Milwaukee Public Television. The episode turned out great — I think it really captured the spirit of South Milwaukee, what makes our city uniquely our city.

District of Character: Another Great Honor For South Milwaukee Schools

There is lots to be proud of when it comes to our South Milwaukee schools. Its focus on character education is one reason why.

I see it come to life in my kids every day, which is why I’m not surprised to hear the entire South Milwaukee School District has been named a State District of Character by the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership. It was the only district to receive the honor. (Three individual schools from the around the state were also honored.)

South Milwaukee will be recommended to the national Character Education Partnership for a National School of Character award to be announced at the national conference in Washington D.C. in October.

From the WCEP …

All over the state, schools of hardworking administrators, teachers and their students try their best to win the coveted designation as a State School of Character. …

Each went through a rigorous review by a committee of professionals who determined to what extent the school exemplifies strong implementation of character education in their schools, based on the Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education. The Principles are in accordance with the National Schools of Character (NSOC) guidelines. Schools and districts are evaluated according to the CEP’s Character Education Quality Standard a Self-Assessment Tool for Schools and Districts. …

Wisconsin schools have been winning such designations every year since 2011.

Why does it matter to the state of Wisconsin that these schools are functioning at such a high level? These kids will become adults. In the not too distant future they will govern, become employees and raise families of their own. These schools enroll nearly 5000 students in total. If one person can influence the world for good, imagine what 5000 educated people of character can do.

To learn about the specific initiatives each institution developed and promoted within the larger character driven education of the schools, please see the state website at www.wicharacter.org.
